Catawba River Tailrace Fishing Report September 2012

Its been a little less than a year since the Duke Energy cranked up the new power station and established the new minimum flow on the Catawba River Tailrace below lake James. In that time I have witnessed the growth of a new fishery. While its still unknown as to how it will progress, one thing is certain it is fishing better than it has in years. With that being said, she still has a way to go. Fish that were stocked last November are still around and they are getting fatter.

Low water float trips on the Catawba River tailrace below lake James have been a great time to experience some late season terrestrial fishing. We have had good success with hopper dropper rigs. Sure you can catch more fish watching an indicator or stripping a bugger, but nothing beats a topwater eat IMO. The fishing will continue to get better as the weather cools. Fall is a great time to fish the Catawba Tailrace (Tailwater) below lake James.

Here are some photos of a Catawba River Slam from the other day.

As the warm water fishing season winds down we will be shifting focus to Catawba River float trips. If you are interested in fishing the Catawba River Tailrace Give us a call at 828-446-5552.
