WNC Smallmouth Report May 22, 2011

I spent Sunday floating the French Broad River near Asheville, NC. The water was up and slightly off color from recent rains. We floated about 8 miles on a section that can produce some good numbers. The fishing was slow but steady We worked the banks, ledges, drop-offs, rip rap, etc. Fish where taken in all locations. we started the day fishing subsurface, but we progressed to topwater poppers and wiggle minnows. Fish are definitely looking up and we were rewarded with some explosive takes and missed.

There is nothing like a smallmouth bass taking a surface fly. I even managed a 16 inch rainbow trout that had found his way into the river from a feeder creek, he was a little camera shy though. If you would like to catch smallmouth on the fly, give us a call at 828-446-5552. We offer float trips on the French Broad, New, Nolichucky, Toe, and Tuckasegee Rivers.

All the soldiers ready for battle!
